- Tree lovers in Durham have one more thing to be proud about thanks to a recent award naming the City of Durham a "Tree City USA" for the 27th year because of its commitment to urban forestry. The Tree City USA® Program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, provides direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns and cities that more than 135 million Americans call home. - The City of Durham’s Purchasing Division has been awarded the Sustained Professional Purchasing Award (SPPA) for 2010. The SPPA is the highest award a purchasing department or division can obtain within the Carolinas Association of Governmental Purchasing (CAGP). The award recognizes sustained excellence in purchasing standards during the previous calendar year and was presented at the 55th Annual Government Purchasing Conference and Vendor Exhibition in Winston-Salem, on March 1, 2011. The City’s Purchasing Division has won this award each year since 2002 and is one of only 12 agencies throughout the Carolinas to receive this year’s award. More.

- The City of Durham’s efforts to help integrate Hispanics into the community are being recognized by the National League of Cities (NLC) as one of the top U.S. cities whose practices should be emulated for promoting understanding of cultural differences between Latinos and other population groups. The NLC’s Municipal Action for Immigrant Integration recognized the Mayor’s Hispanic/Latino Initiative for responding to immigration challenges in the absence of a national immigrant integration policy. - Durham was selected as one of the America’s Promise Alliance 100 Best Communities for Young People, a competition identifying 100 communities nationwide that are dedicated to ending the high school dropout crisis by helping young people overcome challenges to succeed. More.

- Durham Station Transportation Center, the City of Durham’s multimodal center built in 2009, received top honors at Triangle Business Journal’s prestigious SPACE Awards banquet in Raleigh last week. The architect, The Freelon Group, Inc, designed this facility to not only serve as sustainable transit practice but to embrace energy conservation within its own footprint being more than 30 percent below standard energy usage.
