The City of Durham is proud of the good work its employees do every day. Listed below are some of the many awards and honors received by City departments and employees:

- The Triangle region has one more award to add to its list - the top national award for transportation planning from the Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO). The 2009 National Award for Outstanding Achievement in Metropolitan Transportation Planning was awarded to the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (DCHC MPO) and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) for its collaboration on three regional planning efforts.

- The City of Durham has been recognized for the 21st consecutive year for its budget reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), a professional association of over 17,600 members throughout North America that has served the public finance profession since 1906. GFOA presented the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the City’s Department of Budget and Management Services for its annual budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2009. - The City of Durham has one more national award to add to its list thanks to a recent recognition for having one of the greenest government vehicle fleets in the nation. The City’s Fleet Management Department will be recognized on Friday, November 20 for being 32nd in the nation for having the best “green fleet” program by Government Fleet Magazine. The “100 Best Fleets Program” recognizes and rewards peak-performing fleet operations in North America. Currently in its seventh year, program identifies and encourages ever-increasing levels of performance improvement within the fleet industry.

- The City of Durham’s Office of Public Affairs has been recognized with a SAVVY Award for communications outreach at a national conference held last week. The City-County Communications and Marketing Association (3CMA) 21st Annual Conference recognized the City’s Office of Public Affairs for its water conservation campaign entitled, “DurhamSavesWater.org – Instilling a Long-Term Conservation Ethic”.

- Despite the national recession and its revenue impact on the local economy, the City of Durham’s sound financial management has been rewarded by receiving an 'AAA' bond rating from Standard & Poor’s, Fitch Ratings, and Moody's Investors Service. Durham is one of less than 25 cities nationwide that have 'AAA' ratings from all three major bond rating agencies.

- On August 31, 2009 Daniel Curia, assistant chief of operations with the Durham Fire Department received his certification from the Executive Fire Officer Program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's U.S. Fire Administration National Fire Academy. Admission for this program is highly competitive, with graduates earning publication of their formal project papers

- The City of Durham’s popular financial report, the Citizens’ Financial Report, has been recognized for the fifth consecutive year for outstanding achievement by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The Citizens’ Financial Report is an annual publication providing an overview of the City’s financial condition and summary of the City’s progress during the previous fiscal year. This year’s award is for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2008.

- City of Durham Plans Examiner John K. Read, Jr., a 12-year staff member of the City-County Inspections Department, has earned the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation from the United States Green Building Council. The council is a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding green building practices and education. LEED accredited professionals have demonstrated a through understanding of green building techniques, the LEED Green Building Rating System, and the certification process. The program is administered by the Green Building Certification Institute.

- The City of Durham has received international recognition yet again for its financial accountability and reporting to Durham’s citizens. The City’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) has been acknowledged for the 24th consecutive year by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). - The City of Durham’s Purchasing Division has been awarded the Sustained Professional Purchasing Award (SPPA) for 2008. The SPPA is the highest award a purchasing department or division can obtain within the Carolinas Association of Governmental Purchasing (CAGP). The award was presented at the CAGP Spring Conference on March 6, 2009. The City’s Purchasing Division has won this award each year since 2002. More

- Durham Parks and Recreation’s Special Programs/Inclusion unit was recently featured in a national publication for working to make inclusion of all individuals a priority in the programs and services it offers. Parks & Recreation, the monthly magazine of the National Parks and Recreation Association, featured Durham, along with parks and recreation departments in Oregon and Connecticut, for its strong commitment to inclusion. The article focused specifically on DPR’s staff-swap program, which allows general program staff to swap positions, for a designated amount of time, with a staff member who works in programs that serve only participants with disabilities. Staff swap allows these staff members to gain appreciation for and exposure to program participants with disabilities, as well as to gain valuable skills.
