The City of Durham will not discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities on the basis of disability in the City's services, programs, or activities. The City will generally, upon request, provide appropriate aids and services leading to effective communication for qualified persons with disabilities so they can participate equally in the City's programs, services, and activities, The City will make all reasonable modifications to policies and programs to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to enjoy all City programs, services, and activities. Individuals with disabilities who are members of the public seeking information or services from us have access to and use of information and data comparable to the access and use provided to the general public, unless an undue burden would be imposed on us. Upon request, all information contained on this site can be made available in an alternative format, or arrangements can be made by City staff to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities. Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1998 requires that all sites of federal government agencies, and any state and local government agencies receiving federal funding comply. The General Services Department ensures that the City of Durham is in compliance with Title II of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). The department's goal is to improve access to local government programs and facilities for persons with disabilities.

The City will generally, upon request, provide appropriate aids and services leading to effective communication for qualified persons with disabilities so they can participate equally in the City's programs, services, and activities, including sign language, interpreters, documents in Braille and other ways of making information and communications accessible to people who have speech, hearing and/or vision impairments.
Modification to Policies and Procedures:
The City will make all reasonable modifications to policies and programs to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to enjoy all City programs, services, and activities.
Facilities:
The City will make all reasonable modifications to City facilities to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to enjoy all City programs, services, and activities.
The ADA does not require the City to take any action that would fundamentally alter the nature of its programs, services or impose an undue financial or administrative burden.
The City will not place a surcharge on a particular individual with a disability or any group of individuals to cover the cost of providing auxiliary aids/services or reasonable modifications of policies, such as retrieving items from locations that are open to the public but are not accessible to persons who use wheelchairs.
