The DAP served as the home of the Durham Bulls minor league baseball team from 1926 until 1994. The 1988 film "Bull Durham" helped spark new interest in minor league baseball, and the enormous success of the Durham Bulls over the next 15 years prompted the City of Durham to build a new facility for the Bulls (Durham Bulls Athletic Park) in 1995.
Construction at the Durham Athletic Park has been completed and the ballpark was opened in August 2009.
The newly renovated DAP is now operated by Minor League Baseball, serving as a training facility for baseball professionals.
