The Durham Athletic Park (DAP) has been a focal point and anchor of the Durham Community since the early 1900s. The DAP served as the home of the Durham Bulls minor league baseball team from 1926 until 1994. The 1988 film, "Bull Durham", helped spark new interest in minor league baseball, and the enormous success of the Durham Bulls over the next 15 years prompted the City of Durham to build a new facility for the Bulls (Durham Bulls Athletic Park) in 1995.

Since 1995 the Historic DAP has been used by the community as a ball park, and serves as the home field for the North Carolina School of the Arts, and as a venue for baseball and softball. The DAP is also used for concerts and festival, such as the Bimbé Cultural Arts Festival, Bull Durham Blues Festival, and the World Beer Festival.

The renovation plans for the Durham Athletic Park will upgrade the current facility/site so that it can once again serve as a vital recreational site for this section of downtown Durham. Plans will include the continued programming, by Durham Parks and Recreation, of league baseball (youth and adult) and usage of the facility as a special event venue.
