The City of Durham Fire Department is the fourth largest department in the state of North Carolina. The department employs more than 300 personnel, with 90 percent in field operations. With more than 16,000 emergency calls annually, the department holds an Insurance Service Organization (ISO) rating of 3. The department has 15 Engine Companies, four Ladder Companies, and three squads serving as primary response units for its core services, Fire Suppression and Emergency Medical Response. Specialty services and teams include a Hazardous Materials Response Team, participation in the NC Task Force 8 Urban Search and Rescue Team, Technical Rescue, and Swiftwater Rescue.
