Census 2010 Complete Count Committee

April 1, 2010 could be Durham’s most important day in determining City and County budgets over the next ten years. For that is the day the U.S. Census Bureau will issue a call to action for every resident of our nation to “Be counted!”

Durham’s Census 2010 Complete Count Committee is made up of volunteers from civic groups, schools, businesses, and government. They will work together to ensure all Durham residents are counted. The committee will develop plans to reach out to all segments of the greater Durham community. These plans will supplement what the U.S. Census Bureau is already doing through paid advertising and partnership efforts.

The 2010 census is important to residents of Durham because:

  1. The census will ensure that Durham gets its fair share. Census data is used to allocate $300 billion in government funding and is used to guide where to build roads, schools, provide community revitalization and housing grants, and more. A complete count of residents means Durham receives its fair share of funding;
  2. The census affects your ability to be heard. Census data determines how many seats each state will have in Congress and impacts redistricting of state and local districts;
  3. The census brings jobs to Durham: The Census Bureau will hire hundreds of people in Durham and surrounding areas for temporary Census jobs;
  4. Census data is used by Durham in allocating resources. Data is used in transportation planning, police, fire, and other emergency personnel staffing decisions, parks planning, and budget decision-making; and
  5. Census data is used by the private sector in market decisions: the private sector uses the data to determine where to locate shopping centers, grocery stores, pharmacies and commercial services of all sorts.
