Environmental Affairs Board (EAB) Home

The Durham City-County Environmental Affairs Board (EAB) is an advisory board of appointed volunteer citizens that provides expert and comprehensive advice on various matters related to environmental quality and safety. Issues include watershed protection, natural resource protection, monitoring environmental quality, air quality, and industrial development. The EAB is a means for the public to communicate with City and County leaders and facilitate cooperation between the City and County on environmental matters.

The EAB holds general meetings monthly, as well as various committee meetings and work sessions. All meetings are open to the public. We encourage you to attend.

  • Our Water Supply. The latest on Durham's reservoirs and how you can help conserve our precious resources.
  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction in Durham. See what the City and County are doing to cool down the global climate. The EAB is monitoring progress on Durham's greenhouse gas emissions reduction plan and will report to the local governing bodies periodically.
  • National Bio- and Agro- Defense Facility. The Umstead Research Farm in Granville County, just north of Durham, is one of the final candidate sites for the Department of Homeland Security's proposed National Bio- and Agro- Defense Facility. Out of concern for environmental health and safety, the EAB has reviewed the proposal and will be reviewing the draft Environmental Impact Statement, which is due to be released in April 2008.
  • Ellerbe Creek Watershed Restoration. The City of Durham is conducting an assessment of the Ellerbe Creek watershed to identify areas for restoration projects that will improve the health of the creek and its watershed. A public briefing on the project is scheduled for April 2, 2008 as part of the EAB's monthly meeting.
