Mission
The mission of the Solid Waste Management Department is to manage the municipal solid waste, household hazardous waste, recyclables, and disposal services in a manner that is environmentally sound, cost-effective, and safe. The department will partner with the community, civic/non-profit organizations, and other City departments to deliver competitive and quality solid waste services that promote an attractive and healthy environment. The Department will do this by coordinating administration, operations, and educational processes.
Vision
It is the vision of the department to achieve and maintain the following standards and objectives by:
Becoming a recognized leader in the solid waste industry by operating a complete comprehensive solid waste program and promoting sound solid waste management practices through education, training and sound fiscal policies.
- Giving full support to the City administration’s missions and objectives.
- Developing and safely operating a full service yard waste disposal site including the sale of quality products to the public.
- Increasing the City’s recycling rate to a 65% to 70% participation rate.
- Maintaining a high level of customer service to the citizens of Durham.
- Ensuring that the department’s employees receive the best training available enabling them to have a high level of personal development and an opportunity for advancement.
