The following information applies to all City-issued roll-out carts; Green Household Garbage Carts, Blue Recycle Carts, and Brown Yard Waste Carts.
The Department of Solid Waste Management is pleased to offer exempt collection of garbage, recyclables, and yard waste to qualified residents. Exempt collection means that the resident is not required to roll the green garbage, brown yard waste, or blue recycling carts to the curb for pickup.
Residents are to place garbage, recycling, and/or bulky items, at the curb on their collection days no later than 6 a.m. Do not block sidewalks or driveways. One bag of overflow garbage is allowed. It must be placed on top of the green garbage cart. Empty containers should be moved from the curb within 24 hours after pickup.
Yard waste collection is an optional fee-based program. For a $60 fee, you are enrolled into the yard waste program from July 1 to June 30.
The City of Durham offers biweekly recycling service. Go to the Recycling page to find out which items can be recycled.
