Household Hazardous Waste

To aid citizens in the proper and safe disposal of household hazardous waste (HHW) materials, the City of Durham operates a household hazardous waste collection center through a contract with Ecoflo, Inc. This service is open to all Durham City and Durham County residents. Commercial users are forbidden from using the HHW center. The collection center is located at 1900 E. Club Boulevard, Durham, NC.

Operating Hours:

The facillity will be open Saturday January 12 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Effective January 15, 2008 the hours for the HHW facility will be

  • Tuesday and Wednesday from noon – 6:00 pm
  • Thursday and Fridays from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm
  • Saturdays from 7:30 am – 3:00 pm

Acceptable Items from Households Only

  • acids / bases
  • batteries
  • cooking oil
  • drain openers
  • fire extinguisher (dry chemical only)
  • florescent light bulbs
  • household cleaners and polishes, furniture strippers
  • lighter fluid / fuel oil / kerosene / used motor oil / antifreeze
  • photographic chemicals
  • paints* / lacquers
  • pesticides / herbicides / poisons
  • solvents / thinners
  • wood preservatives
  • mercury thermometers
  • propane tanks

*Dried latex paint can be safely disposed of with household garbage. Dry it out by mixing in some kitty litter, sawdust, or sand and allowing it to dry out thoroughly in the sun. Stir the mixture to ensure that it is completely dried out. The paint and can may be thrown out with your trash as long as the lid is removed. (Note: All oil based paints should be taken to the household hazardous waste collection center.)

Unacceptable Materials

  • infectious or medical wastes
  • hypodermic needles or syringes
  • commercially generated hazardous waste
  • trash, garbage and recyclables
  • radioactive materials, including smoke detectors
  • explosives or shock sensitive materials and ammunition
  • unknown or unlabeled materials (require testing to identify)
