To aid citizens in the proper and safe disposal of household hazardous waste (HHW) materials, the City of Durham operates a household hazardous waste collection center through a contract with Ecoflo, Inc. This service is open to all Durham city and county residents. Commercial users are forbidden from using the HHW center. The collection center is located at:

(Located across from the North Durham Water Reclamation Facility)

Operating Hours:

Tuesday and Wednesday from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Acceptable Items from Households Only:

Unacceptable Materials:

  • Medications, used needles, or other medical wastes
  • Commercially generated hazardous waste
  • Garbage, recyclables, or yard waste
  • Radioactive materials, including smoke detectors
  • Explosives or ammunition (contact the Police Department)
  • Unknown or unlabeled materials
  • Cooking oil, motor oil, and antifreeze are not accepted at the HHW facility. However, these items may be taken at no charge to the Transfer Station at 2115 E. Club Boulevard.

Helpful Household Hazardous Waste Tips

  1. How to dry latex paint:
    Mixing in some kitty litter, sawdust, or sand and allowing it to dry out thoroughly in the sun.
    Stir the mixture to ensure that it is completely dried out.
    The paint and can may be thrown out with your trash as long as the lid is removed.

  4. Commercial Hazardous Waste Disposal
    The City’s HHW facility does not accept any materials from commercial users, schools, apartments, or churches. For your convenience, the department provides a list of private service providers. Being on this list is not an endorsement from the City.
