The streets that are resurfaced by Public Works are selected based on a pavement condition survey performed by an engineering consultant hired by the City. For over 20 years, the City (as well as many other cities in North Carolina) has used a street condition survey methodology developed by the Institute of Transportation Research and Education (better known as ITRE) at NCSU. The pavement condition survey that we are currently using to identify those streets to be resurfaced and repaired was performed in Spring 2007. Every segment of every street was surveyed.
The condition ratings range as follow:
The ITRE Pavement Condition Survey not only rates the streets but recommends the type of repair needed. We have over 660 miles of paved City streets and according to the 2007 pavement condition survey 200 miles of them need resurfacing. The City is repairing the worst first. Currently our resurfacing work is focused on streets rated 20-30 and below. This webpage will show you the condition of all City streets:
Disclaimer: This proposed list of streets to be resurfaced by the City of Durham is based on the available funding at the time the project was bid by the contractor. The rising cost of oil directly affects the price of asphalt. Substantial increases in oil prices will reduce the number of streets proposed to be resurfaced in this contract.
