National Tour Promotes Breast Cancer Awareness and Features Pink Fire Truck and Firefighters in Pink Turnout Gear
Durham, N.C. – On Sunday, September 14, Durham residents will get their chance to see a sight most have not – a pink fire truck with firefighters sporting pink turnout gear.
The City of Durham’s Fire Department (DFD) is one of the sponsor’s of the Pink Ribbon Tour, a national sensation helping to raise the level of breast cancer awareness nationwide — one major city at a time. On Sunday, September 14, the DFD and the Raleigh Fire Department will partner with the Pink Ribbon Tour, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and Mix 101.5 FM to celebrate the Tour’s stop in the Triangle. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Tour and their pink fire truck will be in the parking lot of Dick’s Sporting Goods at Brier Creek Commons, located at 8021 Brier Creek Parkway, Raleigh.
Sparky the Fire Dog will be present and attendees will receive giveaways, participate in contests, and take home life-saving information all contributed by Mix 101.5 FM, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and Durham County EMS. Breast cancer survivors and their friends and family will also be invited to sign the fire truck and share their stories via the Pink Ribbon Tour Web site as an inspiration to the newly diagnosed and their loved ones.
According to DFD Chief Bruce T. Pagan, Jr., Durham is actively involved in hosting this tour since his department has been tremendously affected by breast cancer. “Several months ago, one of our firefighters, who has served the City of Durham for more than a decade, was diagnosed with breast cancer,” Pagan said. “With cancer hitting so close to home and affecting one of our own, as a department we are proud to champion this cause. This event promises to be very memorable and we hope our residents will attend – the information they receive just might save their life.”
While the campaign boasts that firefighters “Care Enough to Wear Pink,” the leaders of the Pink Ribbon Tour – initiated by firefighters in Arizona – care enough to travel coast-to-coast in a pink fire truck wearing pink turnout gear specially made by Globe®.
