Durham Parks and Recreation Featured in National Publication

Durham, NC: Durham Parks and Recreation’s Special Programs/Inclusion unit was recently featured in a national publication for working to make inclusion of all individuals a priority in the programs and services it offers.  Parks & Recreation, the monthly magazine of the National Parks and Recreation Association, featured Durham, along with parks and recreation departments in Oregon and Connecticut, for its strong commitment to inclusion.  The article focused specifically on DPR’s staff-swap program, which allows general program staff to swap positions, for a designated amount of time, with a staff member who works in programs that serve only participants with disabilities.  Staff swap allows these staff members to gain appreciation for and exposure to program participants with disabilities, as well as to gain valuable skills.

“Our department is proud to have been included in this project and is grateful for the support of the Durham community and City leaders,” said Sarah Hogan, DPR recreation manager of special programs/inclusion.  “Our belief that everyone benefits when no one is left out is why inclusion of persons with disabilities is so successful, and we are glad Durham Parks and Recreation is being recognized as among the best in the nation.”
