Durham Residents Invited to Join the City Council for Coffee and Conversation

Community Meetings and New Neighborhoods Workshop on the 2010-2011 City Budget Set

DURHAM, N.C. – Durham residents interested in giving their input directly to the Durham City Council on the City’s 2010-2011 fiscal year budget should mark their calendars now to attend one of five “Coffee with Council” community meetings to be held throughout February and March.

Hosted by the Durham City Council, the Coffee with Council sessions are a series of face-to-face meetings with residents designed to give citizens the opportunity to provide direct input to council members on budget items for the upcoming 2010-2011 fiscal year.  The sessions also include a review of the City’s budget outlook for the coming fiscal year.

New for this year, a “Neighborhoods Coffee with Council” session will be held at the Holton Career and Resource Center, 401 N. Driver Street, on Saturday, February 27, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  This interactive workshop is specifically geared toward representatives of neighborhood groups so that these neighborhoods can discuss their different issues and then work together on prioritizing City programs and services that address these concerns. 

Residents who have ideas or comments on the use of City resources are welcome to attend any of the meetings scheduled below:

     •    Saturday, February 13, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Irwin R. Holmes, Sr. Recreation Center at Campus Hills, 2000 S. Alston Avenue (PAC 4)

     •    Saturday, February 20, 2010, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Holton Career and Resource Center, 401 N. Driver Street (PAC 1)

     •    Saturday, February 27, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holton Career and Resource Center, 401 N. Driver Street (Neighborhoods Coffee with Council)

     •    Thursday, March 11, 2010, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall Committee Room, 101 City Hall Plaza (PAC 5 and Spanish translation will be available)

     •    Saturday, March 13, 2010,  from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Community Family Life and Recreation Center at Lyon Park, 1309 Halley Street (PAC 3)

     •    Tuesday, March 23, 2010, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Durham Public School Staff Development Center,  2107 Hillandale Road (PAC 2)


There will also be two budget public hearings held in conjunction with regular City Council meetings. The first public hearing will be held on Monday, March 1 and the second on Monday, June 7 during the regularly scheduled Council meeting.
