Sessions Offered in English and Spanish
Durham residents interested in learning more about the operations and services of the Durham Police Department can register for the spring session of the department’s Citizens Police Academy. Applications are now being accepted for the 6-week academy which will hold sessions April 6 through May 13, 2010. The classes, which are free of charge, will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Classes will be held across from Police Headquarters in the BB & T building (505 S. Duke Street).
The goal of the Citizens Police Academy is to increase community support and awareness of police operations through education and to strengthen police-citizen relationships. Sessions are offered in English and Spanish and provide first-hand knowledge of police units and services, and as well as front line experiences. Classes feature ride-a-long sessions with officers on patrol, K-9 and gang awareness presentations, crime scene awareness and domestic violence information.
The deadline to register for the Academy is Monday, March 22, 2010. Class size is limited. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Direct calls and inquiries to the Community Services Bureau at 560-4404 ext 29452 or ext 29292.
