Fast Facts
     • The Mayor's Summer Youth Work Program offers Durham youth ages 14 to 21 the opportunity to gain work experience and develop skills while connecting with City and County governments and local employers.

     • Approximately 300 summer employment opportunities will be available this year.  Participants will begin work on Monday, June 14 and work until Friday, August 13.

     • Potential youth applicants may visit the City’s Web site at www.durhamnc.gov/mayor/youth_program.cfm to download an application as well as review the job listings and criteria needed to ensure eligibility for each position.  There will also be an interview process.

     • Some of the partnering public organizations and private-sector companies with job opportunities are the City's Office of Economic and Workforce Development; Durham Parks & Recreation; Department of Neighborhood Improvement Services; Department of General Services; Durham Fire Department; Durham County Government; Durham County’s Department of Social Services; Chic-Fil-A at Hillsborough Road; Food Lion; and Youth Empowered for Success.  Other partners include Capitol Broadcasting Company and the Historic American Tobacco Campus, Durham Technical Community College, and North Carolina Central University.

     • To help interested youth prepare for next week’s Job Fair, the City’s Office on Youth held Job Readiness Workshops yesterday to help youth understand the importance of work ethics and the application and résumé process.

     • The Mayor’s Summer Youth Work Program is still in need of employers interested in hiring youth for the summer.  Employers at the Job Fair & Career Expo will have an opportunity to interview interested youth for job opportunities within their organizations, including positions that are for the summer, year-round, full time, and part time.   Employers receive free booth space at the event and must reserve their spot by Wednesday, March 17.

     • Businesses interested in hiring youth for summer employment by participating in the Mayor’s Summer Youth Work Program or reserving a booth at next Friday’s Job Fair should contact Kim Moss, assistant youth services coordinator with the City’s Office on Youth, at (919) 354-2730, ext.11103 or via e-mail at Kim.Moss@durhamnc.gov.
