Making a Great Organization Better

The City of Durham organization has 25 departments and more than 2,400 employees delivering services to the citizens and visitors of Durham. Over the past few years, the organization has faced many complex challenges, including increased service demands and limited financial means. The economic downturn over the past couple of years has further magnified the need to ensure the most effective use of limited resources. To help focus on key priorities, the organization has embarked on a long-term strategic planning process.

The objective: achieve consistent and planned results.
To do so, the organization must clarify its direction and ensure that all organizational efforts are pointed in that direction.

During the planning process, the key priorities will be determined. The strategic plan will serve as the framework for accomplishing these priorities. To ensure success, the organization will integrate the plan into annual budgets and daily operations, and stay on track with sound measurements of progress.
