Project Overview
The City of Durham Transportation Department and the NCDOT are planning a roadway reconfiguration project on Fayetteville Street from Pilot Street to George Street to improve safety and maintain traffic flow along the corridor beginning in 2018.
The project will resurface the damaged road surface and restripe travel lanes. After reconfiguration, this section of Fayetteville Street will have 1 center turning lane, 1 travel lane in each direction, and bicycle lanes in both directions.
Studies indicate that this design will maintain current traffic capacity while improving the safety of people driving, walking, bicycling and taking transit. All work will be within the existing street and will not affect adjacent properties.
March 4 Public Meeting
The City of Durham Transportation Department held a public meeting on March 4, 2015, at the Fayetteville Street Elementary School to discuss plans for the Fayetteville Street Roadway Reconfiguration Project. Handouts outlining project specifics were available and City staff members presented project details and timelines.
