Mission


The Durham Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities serves as an educational and advocacy group for individuals with disabilities. A major goal of the committee is to promote public awareness and sensitivity. Other objectives include establishing a collaborative effort to break down existing barriers surrounding persons with disabilities. The committee is dedicated to corresponding with the Mayor and other community leaders on any needs / issues that relate to persons with disabilities in the areas of housing, education, recreation, transportation and employment.

Committee Functions


The functions of the Mayor's committee are:
  • To affiliate with other Mayor's Committees for Persons with disabilities, the President's Committee on the Employment of the Disabled, and to be involved in activities of other organizations who are advocates for persons with disabilities
  • To promote public awareness of issues pertaining to persons with disabilities throughout the year
  • To sponsor special activities in observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month
  • To advise the City of Durham on issues pertaining to persons with disabilities
  • To provide a regular forum for the discussion of issues pertaining to persons with disabilities
