APRIL 25-29

General
Axis Utility is working to complete final cleanup items this week with final completion and walkthrough anticipated next week. 

Past Week’s Completed Activities
Axis Utility provided site cleanup and poured the concrete apron replacement at Newman Street/Ramseur Street. Closure of the entrance was required to allow the concrete to cure.

Upcoming Week’s Activities (04/25/2022)
Weather permitting, Ramseur Street will be paved at the Newman Street intersection on Tuesday. Axis Utility will be performing final site clean-up, removal of erosion control, and demobilizing equipment.

Traffic Impacts 
Closure of Ramseur Street northbound lane towards Hood Street during paving operations.

APRIL 18-22

General
Axis Utility has substantially completed the project as of this week and will begin cleaning up the project site in the upcoming week of April 22.

Past Week’s Completed Activities
Axis Utility and its subcontractors fine graded and installed ABC stone on Newman Street; paving was completed on Walker Street; and paving was completed on Newman Street.

Upcoming Week’s Activities (04/18/2022)
Ramseur Street will be paved at the Newman Street intersection; Axis Utility will be on site pouring the concrete apron at Newman Street/Ramseur Street. This access to Newman Street to be closed to allow the concrete to cure. Axis Utility will be performing site clean up, removal of erosion control, and demobilizing equipment.

Traffic Impacts
Newman Street will be closed to thru traffic when paving operations occur during work hours; closure of Ramseur access to Newman Street for concrete apron repair. Date is pending.

No water interruptions are expected during this time.

APRIL 11-15

General
Axis Utility will be performing paving operations the week of 4/11. Work will occur in several phases including stone placement, milling, and final paving. Due to the poor soils present and the use of cement stabilization methods for the subgrade, it is asked that any vehicle larger than a passenger car or truck not use Newman Street until final pavement is placed. Please pass this along to your staff and suppliers. This is required to ensure the surface can set without rutting prior to paving.

Past Week’s Completed Activities
Axis Utility and its subcontractors added stone to the surface as required and performed cement stabilization of the subgrade in anticipation of paving the week of 4/11. Please continue to refrain from driving any vehicle larger than a passenger car or truck on Newman Street until final pavement is placed. 

Upcoming Week’s Activities (04/11/2022)
Paving will take place on Walker Street and Newman Street on Wednesday (4/13) and Thursday (4/14), weather pending; the concrete apron at Ramseur will be repaired and will require this access to Newman Street to be closed to allow the concrete to cure. This work will be coordinated with impacted parties when a final date is determined.

Traffic Impacts
Newman Street will be closed to thru traffic when paving operations occur during work hours; Walker Street will be closed to thru traffic when paving operations occur during work hours; as stated previously, it is very important that all large vehicular traffic (trucks, vans, etc.) avoid traveling on Newman Street until final pavement has been placed to avoid damage to the underlying stabilized subgrade. Please be sure to notify any parties affected by this request. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause; and potential closure of Ramseur access to Newman Street for concrete apron repair. Date is pending.

APRIL 4-8

General
Axis Utility will continue work to repave the roadways next week with a tentative completion date of the week of 4/11. Work will occur in several phases including roadway stabilization, stone placement and grading, and final paving. Due to the poor soils present and the use of cement stabilization methods, it is asked that any vehicle larger than a passenger car or truck not use Newman Street from 4/4 through 4/15.  Please pass this along to your staff and suppliers. This is required to ensure the surface can set without rutting prior to paving. 

Past Week’s Completed Activities
Axis Utility and its subcontractors began removing material to get to the subgrade elevation required; Upon subgrade removal, it was discovered that very poor soils exist. This required adjustment of the intended roadway section and methods; Based on the occurrences this week, adjustments were made to the design.

Upcoming Week’s Activities (04/04/2022)
Stone placement will occur on Newman Street early in the week in advance of cement stabilization; Cement stabilization will be performed along the length of Newman Street on Thursday. Upon completion of this step, it is critical that heavy vehicles beyond passenger cars and trucks not use Newman Street to avoid damaging the curing stabilized roadway.  Damage will prolong the activities required to repave the roadway.

Traffic Impacts 
Newman Street will be closed to thru traffic during work hours while work is occurring; Walker Street will be closed to thru traffic during work hours while work is occurring; As stated previously it is very important that all large vehicular traffic (trucks, vans, etc.) avoid traversing through Newman Street over the next two weeks for proper curing of the cement stabilized subgrade. Please be sure to notify any parties affected by this request. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

MARCH 28 - APRIL 1

General
Axis Utility will be using subcontractor, T.R Vernal, in the upcoming week to prepare the subgrade on Newman Street and Walker Street for paving the following week.

Sub base removal on Newman Street (Monday and Tuesday); Sub base removal on Walker Street (Tuesday and Wednesday); Stone placement and fine grading on Newman Street and Walker Street (Wednesday and Thursday). 

Traffic Impacts
Newman Street will be closed to thru traffic (Monday and Tuesday during working hours); Walker Street will be closed to thru traffic (Tuesday and Wednesday during working hours); There will be times on Wednesday and Thursday where work will simultaneously be performed on Walker Street and Newman Street. The contractor will work to accommodate local traffic; If any specific delivery times or large vehicular traffic needs are required on Walker Street or Newman Street in the upcoming week, please coordinate with Danny Carbajal and Wade Tong (cell numbers below).

March 21 - April 1

General
The City has come to an agreement with the contractor on paving Newman Street and Walker Street. Work will be completed in the upcoming weeks.

Following Week’s Activities (03/28/2022)
Subbase removal, stone placement, and fine grading on Newman Street and Walker Street. Milling and paving will take place the following week (4/4/2022 – 4/7/2022).

Traffic Impacts
During stone placement and grading operations, Newman Street will be closed while Walker Street is open. Vice versa, when Walker Street is closed, Newman Street will be open. During paving operations for Walker Street, one lane of Walker Street will be closed for paving while one lane remains open for one-way through traffic. Newman Street will remain open. During paving operations for Newman Street, no through-traffic will be allowed on Newman Street. Walker Street will remain open.

MARCH 14 - 18

General


Due to poor soil conditions, modifications were required to the pavement design. The City is currently negotiating these changes with the contractor. Work will be completed as soon as these negotiations are completed.

The contractor is scheduled to place ABC stone on Newman Street Tuesday and Wednesday, weather permitting; If ABC stone can be placed on Newman Street as scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday, Walker Street and Newman Street may be paved at the end of the week. These activities are dependent on a string of three to four good weather days.

The water main has been installed and is in service. Over the last couple of weeks the City of Durham has been working on investigating soil conditions on Newman Street with regard to placement of asphalt for the project. Modifications to accommodate the soil conditions on site are underway and will be based on geotechnical engineer recommendations. The pavement work will occur once final details are determined and once the weather is suitable for paving. Minimal work is expected for this week; Potential concrete removal may occur in a small area on Newman Street in preparation for geotechnical investigations; Falcon Engineering may be on site performing geotechnical investigations in preparation for paving after the New Year holiday.

Crew will continue laying water main on Newman Street towards E Ramseur Street; Crew expects to be in front of Ponysaurus early week. They will begin excavating in East Ramseur St to locate the existing water main for the proposed connection. Project figure/map for week of November 15-19

Walker Street will remain open to thru traffic; Newman Street will be closed to street parking 12:00am - 4:30pm; Please note that some cars have been parked overnight on Newman Street, which can impede construction progress the following morning. november 1-5

General
This upcoming week Axis Utility will be advancing down Newman Street with their pipe laying operation. We understand that patrons of area businesses have been observed moving traffic control devices during active work hours. The contractor is working to keep a safe and secure site and may use equipment or other means in the future to prevent encroachment into the work site with vehicles.

Past Week’s Completed Activities
Crews backfilled the trench in Walker Street and capped the trench with ABC stone-this will remain until asphalt is placed; Plates have been removed except for one at Walker Street and Hood Street; a general clean up has been done on Walker Street. 

Upcoming Week’s Activities
Continue laying water main on Newman Street towards E Ramseur Street; Continue monitoring and addressing any clean up issues that may arise.

This upcoming week Axis Utility will begin installing new water main on Newman Street from Walker Street towards E. Ramseur Street. Also, Axis Utility has entered into an agreement with the owner of 210/208 Newman Street to use the property as a lay down area for their materials and equipment.  This agreement will help lighten up some of the congestion in the work area.  Please see the attached figure for additional information.

Traffic Impacts
Interaction between DeVita Durham Dialysis and Contractor last week has been noted. Please allow the contractor time to accommodate traffic when traffic interruptions occur. They are doing their best to minimize impacts; Axis Utility will be taking one lane of traffic in work area (west side of Walker St); Foreman on site is aware of the importance to maintain access for DeVita Durham Dialysis and G&G deliveries; Walker Street will be open to thru traffic; Newman Street traffic will not be impacted--access to street parking may be limited as noted on the project map below.

Project Facts:

  • This project will install a new 12-inch water main along Newman Street and Walker Street.  
  • The total length of the new water main is approximately 730 feet.
  • Connections to existing mains will occur in Walker Street and in Ramseur Street.
  • The design and permitting phase of the project was completed in February 2021.
  • Construction is expected to begin October 11, 2021.

FAQs:


Why is this work needed, what is included, how much will it cost, and how long will it take?
The project will install a new water main for parcels along Newman Street that do not currently have service. It also prepares for future connections across Fayetteville Street on Walker Street and Henderson Street. The project is expected to cost approximately $350,000 and take 90 days to complete.

Will my business or property be impacted during the construction phase of this project?
Construction will not occur on private properties but you will notice pedestrian, traffic, and noise impact. The City’s contractor is required to keep access open to residences and businesses at all times. On-street parking and pedestrian access may be obstructed due to work or traffic detours. Workers will repave any areas they disturb and will grade and reseed lawns at the end of the project.
