Purpose
The GoDurham Better Bus Project will design street, sidewalk, and bus stop improvements that provide safe access to bus stops, enhance comfort at bus stops, and improve bus service on GoDurham routes.
Bus Access | Recommend and design sidewalks, crosswalks, curb ramps, and other pedestrian improvements that provide better access to bus stops. | |
Bus Stops | Recommend shelters, benches, and other improvements at bus stops that make waiting for the bus more comfortable and convenient. | |
Bus Service | Identify bus delay hot spots and design bus priority projects like changes to traffic signals, pavement markings, and signage that improve bus speed and reliability. |
Better Bus Project Overview
The 18-month Better Bus Project consists of five individual projects that will identify GoDurham bus access and service improvements system-wide, with additional focus on GoDurham Routes 3 and 5. A map of improvements can be found at the bottom of this page. Public engagement for the Better Bus Project is guided by the Equitable Community Engagement Blueprint, adopted by the City of Durham in 2019.

BUS AccessWhat will the project do: recommend improvements to sidewalks and crosswalks that will provide better access to bus stops. Where: streets and sidewalks within a 1/4 mile of GoDurham bus routes. Learn more about the Bus Access project | |
FAYETTEVILLE STREET CORRIDORWhat will the project do: recommend ways to make it easier to get to the bus stop, help riders feel more comfortable and secure waiting for the bus, and make improvements that will help speed up GoDurham Route 5 to make sure riders get to their destinations on time. HOLLOWAY STREET CORRIDOR/VILLAGE TRANSIT CENTERWhat will the project do: recommend ways to make it easier to get to the bus stop, help riders feel more comfortable and secure waiting for the bus, and make improvements that will help speed up GoDurham Route 3 to make sure riders get to their destinations go on time. The study will also upgrade the bus stops at the Village Shopping Center (Wellons Village). Where: streets, sidewalks, and bus stops along GoDurham Route 3 between Roxboro Street and Highway 70, and the area of The Village Shopping Center (Wellons Village). BUS SPEED AND RELIABILITYWhat will the project do: determine what is slowing down buses and affecting their ability to arrive on time. The study will design quick-build projects like changes to traffic signals, pavement markings, and signage that will help prioritize buses, and improve bus speed and reliability. Where: GoDurham bus routes, with a focus on routes with high-frequency or ridership (i.e., the most used bus routes) | |
Durham Station TRANSIT AREAWhat will the project do: evaluate downtown bus routes to and from Durham Station and recommend street improvements that reduce delays and make the bus more reliable. Where: downtown streets surrounding Durham Station | |
