With funding provided by the City of Durham, the Community Development Department has supported the creation of 20 additional Habitat For Humanity newly-built or substantially rehabilitated houses in North East Central Durham (NECD) neighborhoods. All homes were purchased by low-income residents with household incomes below 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI).
Piedmont Rentals consists of eight housing units located on E. Piedmont Avenue in the Southside neighborhood. As the developer, Durham Community Land Trustees (DCLT) renovated the units which range from 1,227 to 1,894 square feet. All units house persons with incomes at or below 60% of the Area Median Income, and in an effort to provide supportive services, DCLT used Section 8 VASH vouchers to house two veterans on site.
The Southside project area consists of approximately 125 acres located on the southern edge of downtown Durham and just north of North Carolina Central University (NCCU). Boundaries of the project area are generally Lakewood Avenue on the north, the American Tobacco Trail on the west, Umstead Street on the south, and Fayetteville Street on the east.
Veranda at Whitted School, located at 200 East Umstead Street, is one of the most significant landmarks in the Southside area, in addition to being a unique historic landmark. Together with an architecturally compatible addition, the former school provides 79 units of affordable senior housing for those 62 and over and a pre-kindergarten facility containing eight classrooms. The Whitted School is historic both because of its circa 1922 architecture, and because it was the City's first high school built to educate African Americans.
