Project Description
Ninth Street streetscape improvement project is a public-private redevelopment project that seeks to address infrastructure challenges along Ninth Street. This joint project between the City of Durham and CPGI Regency LLC is designed to support the development of commercial retail/mixed used developments and to enhance the visual appeal of the Ninth Street commercial corridor. The limits of the project are from Main Street to Markham Street.

Project parameters in the street right of way include:
  • Concrete curbs, gutters and drive aprons
  • Concrete sidewalks, street furniture, and updated trash receptacles on both sides of Ninth Street
  • Decorative historic-style street lighting
  • Handicap accessibility ramps per Americans With Disabilities Act standards
  • Street milling and striping
Project Status
All existing on street parking is available on the east side of the street. Between 50% - 70% of parking is available on the west side of the street. The city parking lot also remains available. Businesses along Ninth Street remain accessible and open for business.

The project is divided into 4 phases;
  • Phase A - Safeway Street to 1st driveway of public parking lot
  • Phase B - 1st driveway of public parking lot to 2nd driveway of public parking lot
  • Phase C - 2nd driveway of public parking lot to Wachovia Bank driveway
  • Phase D - Wachovia Bank driveway to Main Street

Phase A & B


Phase A and B are open to parking and sidewalk use. Milling and paving complete. Only benches, trash cans, and punch list items remain.

Phase C


Curb and gutter is complete, sidewalk is installed, milling and paving is complete. Need to finish light fixture installation and subsequent brick pavers. Anticipating a November 21, 2014 completion depending upon weather this coming week.

Phase D


All work should be completed by December 12, 2014.
