Most City of Durham Offices Closed to Observe New Year's Holiday

The City of Durham will observe the New Year on Monday, January 2. Most City offices, including City Hall and all non-emergency City operations, will be closed to the public. Emergency services may be reached by calling 911. Non-emergency concerns may be directed to (919) 560-4600.

Curbside Solid Waste Collections

Free Live Tree Drop-Off Locations

Live trees will be accepted for free disposal at the City’s Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, located at 2115 E. Club Blvd., beginning Monday, January 2 until Saturday, February 4. The hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday. 

Live trees may also be dropped off at no charge at the following seven park locations on Saturday, January 7; Saturday, January 14; Saturday, January 21; and Saturday, January 28 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Solid Waste Management crews will be on site each of these Saturdays to assist.

Free Curbside Collections for Yard Waste and Exempt Service Customers Only

Free curbside collections for live trees are only available to current yard waste customers and current exempt service customers. Curbside live tree collections will take place from January 2 through February 3, and current customers should place their tree at the curb on their normal collection day. A tree collection will not count toward a free brush collection for yard waste customers.

Live Tree Disposal Instructions

All live trees left at any of the seven free drop-off locations as well as curbside must adhere to the following disposal instructions:

  • Trees must be cut in half if taller than six feet.
  • Trees mush have all decorations and hardware removed including tinsel, lights, garland, ornaments, nails, and stands.
  • Trees should not be inside bags.

City Council Meeting

The City Council meeting is re-scheduled for Tuesday, January 3 beginning at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall.

  • This regular business meeting will be livestreamed on City’s website; on the City's YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter pages; and on Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV through the free Boxcast app. 
  • This meeting will also be televised live on Durham Television Network (Spectrum channel 8, Frontier channel 70, and AT&T U-verse channel 99).

Parks and Recreation

  • Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) administrative office and all facilities will be closed beginning Friday, December 23 through Monday, December 26, and will reopen on Tuesday, December 27.  DPR recreation centers will be closed on Sunday, January 1.  All DPR facilities will be closed on Monday, January 2, and will reopen on Tuesday, January 3.

Downtown Parking

  • The Park Durham Customer Service Center will be closed on Friday, December 23; Monday, December 26; and Monday, January 2. 
  • On City-designated holidays, downtown parking is free in on-street parking spaces, in some City-owned parking garages, and in City-owned surface parking lots. 
  • To check the Special Event Parking Schedule, where the $7 per vehicle rate goes into effect in the Durham Centre, Corcoran Street and Church Street garages 90 minutes before scheduled events, visit the Special Event Parking Calendar.

GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS

  • Holiday service is available on most GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS routes with the exception of Sunday, December 25. On Saturday, December 24 service ends at 7:30 p.m.

Durham One Call

  • Durham One Call will be closed on Friday, December 23; Monday, December 26; and Monday, January 2. Residents may submit service requests in the following ways, and staff will forward requests for City services to the appropriate department on the next business day:

Water and Sewer Emergencies

Water main break and sewer overflow calls for service placed after-hours, on weekends or on City-recognized holidays should be directed to the Water Management Department’s after-hours emergency number at (919) 560-4344, which will dispatch on-call crews.
