Special Olympics fundraising, senior citizen recreation and Halloween safety outreach are key events planned for Durham Police Department’s 2015 National Crime Prevention Month observance. The Community Services Division is holding three major activities in October to promote community service, personal safety strategies and shared responsibilities for helping to keep the community safe.
Saturday, October 24, 2015, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., officers will go beyond the call of duty to literally serve customers at Red Robin Restaurant (5313 New Hope Commons) as part of the Tip-A-Cop fundraiser for Special Olympics. One-hundred percent of the tips customers donate to officers will benefit Special Olympics. [Durham County Sheriff’s officers will serve 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.]
For the sixth consecutive year in collaboration with the Durham Center for Senior Life, a Senior Citizens vs. Police Officers Olympic Challenge will promote fun and games, and raise awareness of crime and safety issues among participants. The challenge will be held Tuesday, October 27, 2015, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Durham Senior Center located at 406 Rigsbee Avenue. Activities will include billiards, table tennis, Wii bowling, checkers and more.
Saturday, October 31, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the department is hosting Trunk or Treat Safety Fair at Walmart at 1525 Glenn School Road. The Community Resource Unit will provide LED light-up bracelets for children up to age 12 to promote pedestrian safety while trick or treating. Event will also feature McGruff the crime dog, free candy, safety resources as well as participation from the Durham County Sheriff’s Department and Durham County Emergency Medical Services.

History of Crime Prevention Month
In 1984, the National Crime Prevention Council designated October Crime Prevention Month. Every year since then, government agencies, civic groups, schools, businesses, and youth organizations have reached out to educate the public, showcase their accomplishments, and explore new partnerships during this special month.
October has become the official month for recognizing and celebrating the practice of crime prevention, while promoting awareness of important issues such as victimization, volunteerism, and creating safer, more caring communities. The month-long celebration typically spotlights successful crime prevention efforts on the local, state, and national levels.
