DURHAM, N.C. - On August 8, Durham police officers were involved in a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in the New Hope Commons shopping center, in the 5400 block of New Hope Commons Drive.
“We would like to express our concern and condolences to everyone involved. Any loss of life is always a tragic event,” said Police Chief C.J. Davis.
According to a preliminary investigation, officers received information from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office that an armed suicidal man was driving a red pick-up truck in the vicinity of the New Hope Commons shopping center.
Based on the description provided by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, officers attempted to locate the man for approximately 90 minutes in the area surrounding the shopping center.
The officers encountered the man in the parking lot shortly before 8: 15 p.m. and attempted to speak with him. Officers indicated that the man displayed a handgun and pointed it at them, which caused the officers to fire their weapons.
DPD Officers at the scene performed CPR on the man. He was transported to a local hospital where he died a short time later.
The incident is being investigated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), and the DPD Professional Standards Division, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
