Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?

I would encourage any citizen that loves the Durham community to apply to be on a board, committee or commission.  Working alongside other citizens, not only builds a better understanding of how the City is governed, but it also allows for valuable relationships to be built with those that may or may not think as you do.  Diversity has been key in the growth of Durham, so why not be part of that continued change?   

What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?

As an outgoing member of the Human Relations Commission, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my experience.  In my various capacities while on the Commission for the past six years, I believe I have not only grown personally, but professionally.  This growth can be accredited to my fellow commissioners, as they have definitely made me think outside of MY box and become a better leader within my community.  I also believe that the community members I have met that stood for their rights and their concerns, showing courageousness in spite of everything, have had a significant impact on me.  These individuals and groups have shown me no matter what, speaking up for yourself and your beliefs is ALWAYS the right thing.  Lastly, I believe that the city officials I have met have assisted me in my growth.  These individuals have shown me that it’s more than just being a “figurehead” for the City, but it takes heart, drive, empathy and compassion to work for the great people of Durham.

What is your favorite part about living in Durham?

My favorite part about living in Durham is definitely the atmosphere/culture. The City of Durham, to me, has always been a place where everyone can be embraced and accepted for who they are.   Durham is a place where most people don’t shy away from controversial issues; we tackle it directly in an effort to find solutions for the common good.  Durham, I must say is a city that seems to “talk the talk and walk the walk”.  From the historical aspects of the past to the booming science and technology of the present, Durham has something to offer everyone.
