Registration for the Citizen Police Academy is Underway
2019 Session to run August 20 - October 1
Durham, NC – Durham residents interested in learning about operations and services of the Durham Police Department can register for the 2019 session of the department’s Citizen Police Academy. Applications are being accepted for the free six-week academy which will run August 20 through October 1, 2019. The classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Durham Police Headquarters (602 E. Main Street).
The goal of the Citizen Police Academy is to increase awareness of police operations through education and to strengthen police-community relationships. Sessions provide first-hand knowledge of police units and services, as well as front line experiences. The academy offers state-of-the-art simulation scenarios, hands-on examination of police gear and equipment, police ride-alongs, and various sessions on the department’s administrative, investigative, uniform patrol and community services operations.
The academy is open to Durham County residents (ages 16 and up). Durham business owners, Durham City and County government employees, and Civilian Police Review Board members are encouraged to register. Applicants must pass a criminal background check.
