The City Clerk's Office Presents the Monthly Board Member Spotlight:
Jenna Bailey, Durham City-County Appearance Commission
Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?
There's never been a better time to live in Durham! Joining a board, committee, or commission gives you an opportunity to participate in the conversation of planning Durham's future. Furthermore, studies have shown that taking an active role in your community forms stronger bonds of place attachment and increases your social capital.
What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?
My favorite part about serving on the Appearance Commission is connecting with the diverse group of individuals that make up our team! Everyone brings something unique to the table in terms of experience, skill, and point of view which leads to dynamic, thought-provoking discussions.
What is your favorite part about living in Durham?
My favorite part about living in Durham is our sense of community. Julie Bryce, co-founder of Bull City Mini said it best: "Durham is small enough that everyone is sort of incentivized to be a little kinder than necessary because chances are you'll see them again- at Whole Foods, at the Scrap, running around East Campus, or at the Farmers Market." So say good morning as you pass a fellow walker, thank the cashier or server by name, and introduce yourself to the group sitting next to you at the picnic table because a community that feels seen and heard is a force to be reckoned with!
