Durham Police Investigate Single-Vehicle Fatal Crash
Durham police are investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash that happened Saturday night on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard near Academy Road.
The crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. when a 2005 Ford Focus driven by Devin Hopkins, 41, of Durham, ran off the left side of the road. According to investigators, Hopkins overcorrected, causing his vehicle to spin 180 degrees and slide a long distance before the rear left corner of the car struck a bridge column.
A passenger in the rear left of the car - Gregory Alston, 53, of Durham – was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the right front seat – Anthony Mills, 43, of Durham – was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Hopkins was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Investigators charged Hopkins with felony death by motor vehicle and felony serious injury by motor vehicle. Hopkins has been placed in Durham County Jail under a $50,000 bond. Speed and alcohol were both suspected factors in the crash, according to investigators.
