Curbside and drop-off requirements for live tree disposal are as follows: 

• Trees taller than six feet must be cut in half.
• All decorations including tinsel, lights, garland, ornaments, nails, stands, and hardware must be removed.
• Trees should not be in bags.

Curbside Pick-up

Yard Waste customers should place their live trees at their curb on their regularly scheduled collection day. Tree locations will be noted by weekly collection crews and added to the next available Saturday collection either on January 11, January 25, or February 1. A tree collection will not count toward free brush collections for yard waste customers. 

Non-Yard Waste customers must contact Durham One Call at (919) 560-1200, submit an online service request, or submit a request through their free smartphone app in the Apple and Google Play stores to schedule a free curbside collection of their live Christmas tree. All service requests must be received no later than 5 p.m. on January 31. Once received, service requests will be scheduled for the next available Saturday collection on either January 11, January 25, or February 1. 

This will be the final year that non-yard waste customers may request free curbside collections. In January 2021, non-yard waste customers will need to bring their live trees for free disposal to the E-Waste Recycling, Paper Shredding & Live Tree Drop-Off Event, the City’s Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, or to one of the City’s parks. A list of parks accepting free live tree drop-offs as well as the January 2021 date of the E-Waste Recycling, Paper Shredding & Live Tree Drop-Off Event will be announced in early December 2020.

Drop-off Collection Sites & Events

The City’s Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, located at 2115 E. Club Blvd., will also accept live tree drop-offs at no charge from January 3 through February 1. The facility is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

New for this year, customers who don’t wish to wait for curbside collection or visit the City’s Waste Disposal and Recycling Center may also drop off their live trees at no charge at the following six parks from 7 a.m. to noon on January 4, January 11, January 18, and January 25. Solid Waste crews will be on site each of these Saturdays to assist except for January 18, which is when the E-Waste Recycling, Paper Shredding & Live Tree Drop-Off Event will take place.

E-Waste Recycling, Paper Shredding & Live Tree Drop-Off Event January 18
The City’s Solid Waste Management Department is also hosting free event to collect old electronics (e-waste), papers for shredding, live trees, and old clothes and textiles on Saturday, January 18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Durham County Memorial Stadium in the home side parking lot, located at 750 Stadium Dr. Staff will be on hand to assist with unloading these items.
