The City Clerk's Office Presents the Monthly Board Member Spotlight:

April Johnson, Durham Historic Preservation Commission

Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?

I encourage Durham residents to consider areas in need of improvement in the community and contribute your time, energy, expertise, and experience to help improve an area of interest or concern.  I am a big supporter of serving on boards, committees, or commissions because we all have something to give that elevates our community. Civic participation allows folks to engage with other community members with different perspectives on issues so that we learn, grow and create evolved solutions for the good of Durham.

What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?

What I enjoy most about serving on the Historic Preservation Commission is protecting how we maintain artifacts in the built environment that speak to Durham's story and also get to know property owners who also care about historic buildings.

What  is your favorite part about living in Durham?

My favorite part about living in Durham is that our civic leaders are accessible and that it is easy to be involved in the community simply by joining boards, committees, and commissions.
