[ARCHIVED] Suspension of Residential Disconnects Due to COVID-19

In light of the public health threat posed by COVID-19, on Monday, March 9th, the City’s Department of Water Management suspended the disconnection of residential water services for nonpayment. Residential Water and Sewer customers who are experiencing hardship and are not able to pay their past-due balances will continue to receive uninterrupted service. On March 31, 2020, Governor Roy Cooper signed an Executive Order that required all utilities in the state (electric, gas, water, and wastewater) to do the same. This Order means Durham’s Department of Water Management, along with utilities across North Carolina, will continue to suspend disconnection for nonpayment for the next 60 days.

Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that frequent hand washing is one of the best ways to avoid exposure to illness and stay healthy. Providing uninterrupted water service is an essential step in the City’s effort to fight the spread of the Coronavirus. We also are encouraging our customers to make payments online and avoid trips to City Hall to minimize potential exposure for themselves and City Employees.

Customers should continue to make on-time payments or set up payment arrangements to avoid large balances and collections procedures later.
