The City Clerk’s Office Presents the Monthly Board Member Spotlight:
Dan Hill, Durham Sports Commission
Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?
Raising your hand and saying "put me in the game
coach" is a commitment to being a participant in improving the quality oflife for all Durham residents. If you are interested in or passionate about a
particular issue, jump in and be part of the solution. By volunteering you willmeet new people from all walks of life who are equally committed to the mission
of that particular board or commission.
What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?
The Durham Sports Commission was formed almost 4 years agoto promote sports tourism in Durham. Our mission is to attract State, regional
and national sporting events to Durham with the expectation that theparticipants will stay in our Durham hotels, dine in our fine restaurants and
shop in our retail stores. We also strive to have events in which our localathletes can participate.
I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of a startup
organization that is effectively competing with the 500+ Sports Commissionsorganized throughout the US. Working with the Discover Durham staff and the
other 8 appointed members of the Sports Commission has been very rewarding.
What is your favorite part about living in Durham?
I am fortunate to have grown up in Durham, graduating fromSouthern High School in ’62 and Duke ’66. I now realize that I did not have to leave
Durham County to find a sense of purpose and belonging. To be part of acommunity each of us shares provides an obligation to give of ourselves.
Serving on one of the boards, committees or commissions provides each of uswith the opportunity to fully participate in Durham’s renaissance. For me
working with new friends to help move Durham forward is part of what makes meproud to be "from Durham".
