Durham Police Investigate Fatality Wreck on US 70
At approximately 3:40 pm on June 16, 2020, Durham Officers responded to a fatal vehicle crash on US Hwy 70 West near Cheek Road. The crash closed both directions of US Hwy 70 for approximately 3 hours.
A 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Antonio Williams (8/18/98) of Roxboro, NC, was traveling westbound on US Hwy 70 when it struck the front end of 2017 Chevrolet Silverado traveling eastbound on US Hwy 70. An initial investigation showed that Mr. Williams lost control of the Chevy Cruze and entered the oncoming lane of travel which was occupied by the Chevy Silverado. The crash between the two vehicles caused the Cruze to spin counter-clockwise until it ended up sideways in its original lane of travel. It was at that time that the Cruze was struck by the Chevy Tahoe, which was traveling westbound in the same lane as the Cruze.
The driver of the Chevy Silverado was transported to Duke Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Mr. Williams was also transported to Duke Hospital, where he later died. Williams was not wearing his seatbelt.
Neither excessive speed or impairment are suspected and no charges are being filed at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
