Families and non-profits in our community are depending on human services now, perhaps more than any time 

in recent history. DPD is proud to have recently raised more than $10,000 for the Autism Society of North 

Carolina and to be a supporter of two campaigns currently in progress across the state – #SONC Virtual Torch 

Run and #NAMIWalks NC. 

Recently representatives from the Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) personally thanked Chief Cerelyn 

Davis and employees (officers and non-sworn) for holding an awareness, education and charitable-giving 

campaign that raised $10, 475 dollars to boost ASNC’s annual fundraising campaign.  

“The more awareness we can spread the more safe they [autistic children] will be,” states ANSC 

Communications Director David Laxton. “It creates a strong partnership because now more people know that 

the Autistic Society of North Carolina is there for them. We can’t thank [DPD] enough for making sure people 

have heard that message.” 

Special Olympics of North Carolina (SONC). In addition, at last check DPD was in first place in the state for funds 

raised by agencies and groups participating in the Special Olympics North Carolina’s (SONC) Keep the Hope 

Virtual Torch Run. So far, DPD has raised more than $7,000 for Special Olympics this year. 

The cancellation of DPD’s annual spring DPD Cops on Tops campaigns due to COVID-19, prevented outreach and 

fundraisers benefitting law enforcement Torch Run and other Special Olympics programs. To demonstrate DPD’s 

dedication to the cause, department administrators approved employees’ requests to extend the department’s 

beard amnesty fundraising promotion to inspire employees to contribute to the Special Olympics campaign.

National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI). DPD’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) participated in promotions to 

help bolster support for NAMI Walks Your Way North Carolina promotions, the nation’s largest series of mental 

health awareness and fundraising events. NAMIWalks was a virtual experience on May 30 that was joined by 

NAMIWalks across the country.
