The City Clerk’s Office Presents the Monthly Board Member Spotlight:
KEELAN BROWN, DURHAM PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (dpac) oVERSIGHT COMMITTEE
Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?
I think it is very important to have a voice in our community in order to be part of the change that we desire. The community engagement is critical to encourage transparency and accountability as we work to always improve the Durham experience!
What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?
I thoroughly enjoy the ability to represent the Durham community by ensuring those underserved members of our community have a voice. My enjoyment comes when the community has an opportunity to utilize and experience the great things this city has to offer. As Chair of the DPAC Oversight Committee, I enjoy the collaborative effort that our committee has with the DPAC staff and leadership especially when it comes to ensuring that the community outreach and programming is culturally diverse and inclusive.
What is your favorite part about living in Durham?
My favorite part about living in Durham is the historical significance it possesses. Every time I walk downtown and think of Black Wall Street, it becomes nostalgic to know how much black history and key contributions started right here in the heart of Durham. I think it is important as a resident and community volunteer that we ensure such memories are never forgotten nor lost in the revitalization of this city!
