At approximately 12:30 a.m. today, an officer in the vicinity of the Family Fare at 2211 North Roxboro Street was flagged down in response to an alleged kidnapping.  A woman reported that while she and her boyfriend were inside the store, a man stole a black Pontiac G6 with her baby in the back seat.  

About 40 minutes later, a Durham Police officer located and attempted to stop the suspect vehicle near Cook Road and Fayetteville Street.  After proceeding onto Interstate 40 East, officers discontinued their attempts to stop the vehicle due to the vehicle’s increasing speed.  Officers notified nearby law enforcement agencies including Raleigh Police Department.

Raleigh police officers later located the stolen vehicle near Garner Road, but the baby was not inside. The driver, Richard Thomas Jones, 35, of Durham, indicated that he had left the baby at an apartment in Durham prior to the Durham officers’ attempted traffic stop.  Durham officers responded to the apartment and located the baby unharmed.

Durham investigators charged Jones with second-degree kidnapping, felony fleeing in a motor vehicle to elude law enforcement officials and larceny of a motor vehicle. Additional charges were obtained by Raleigh officers.

“I am proud of the hard work and partnership demonstrated by the Durham Police Department and the Raleigh Police Department in bringing this case to a swift and safe conclusion. I am very grateful that the baby was located and is doing well,” said Durham Police Chief C.J. Davis.

The investigation is ongoing and there are no further details at this time.
