Durham police are investigating a fatal crash that happened this morning on Interstate 40 West near the N.C. 751 exit.
The crash happened at 6:10 a.m. when a 2010 Nissan Altima driven by Antonio Waddell, 24, of Durham crashed into the back of a 2004 Ford F150 pickup truck driven by Paul Thorne, 40, of Clayton. Waddell was driving behind Thorne in the center lane of I-40 West when the crash occurred.
Waddell, who was ejected from his vehicle, was taken to the hospital, where he died a short time later. Thorne was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. Investigators said speed appears to have been a factor in the crash.
Several lanes of I-40 West were closed for approximately three hours. All lanes have re-opened.
