An 11-year-old Durham girl suffered a gunshot wound last night while she was riding in a vehicle on Guess Road near Horton Road.
An officer was in a parking lot on Hillandale Road when a vehicle pulled in around 9:30 p.m. and the driver told the officer a child in the vehicle had been shot. The child was conscious and alert but bleeding from a wound on the top of her head. The officer and other DPD officers provided medical assistance to the child until EMS arrived. The 11-year-old was taken to the hospital for treatment of an injury that does not appear to be life-threatening.
The child’s mother told officers they were driving north on Guess Road near Horton Road when they heard shots from an unknown direction. The mother then realized her child, who was sitting in the back seat, had been injured. Witnesses told officers they saw the occupants of two vehicles firing shots at each other on Guess Road near Horton Road. Investigators believe the child and other occupants of the vehicle were not the intended targets.
