The City Clerk’s Office Presents the Monthly Board Member Spotlight:

KATY CLUNE, CULTURAL ADVISORY BOARD

Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?

By serving on a public board for the City of Durham, you expand both your understanding of our city, advocate on behalf of our community, and you also get to know new colleagues and friends!

What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?

The Cultural Advisory Board includes arts and culture advocates with very different areas of expertise, backgrounds, and interests. I value how my colleagues are willing to both listen and question each other in equal measure as we consider some of the most challenging issues, including public arts funding infrastructure and increasing racial equity in Durham’s cultural community.

What is your favorite part about living in Durham?

I moved to North Carolina from Washington, D.C. in 2013, and to Durham in 2015. I love living here for two main reasons: the proximity to nature and the size of our community. In DC, I hardly knew any business owners. In Durham, I know the people and stories behind so many of the places I frequent, it makes shopping local even more meaningful. I’m lucky to be renting a house right next to the Ellerbee Creek Trail, too. Sitting on our deck and staring at the trees has measurable healing powers.
