The City Clerk’s Office Presents the Monthly Board Member Spotlight:
Aubrey zinaich, durham tourism and development authority
Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?
Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist teacher, once said, “It takes time to practice generosity, but being generous is the best use of our time.” Giving back to our community is an act of selfless service. It helps us actively participate in how our community grows through new friendships, listening to others, and learning what the community needs to prosper and support future generations.
What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?
Everywhere I go, I love talking about how unique Durham is. It excites me to see other people experiencing Durham for the first time. Now, more than ever, the work of the Tourism Development Authority is vital. Not only are we providing strategic leadership to Durham’s hospitality sector, but we are also providing much needed support to our small business community to aid them in weathering this pandemic. Serving alongside a diverse group of people who feel an immense sense of pride about this community is invigorating. I am proud to be a part of a board committed to serving the people of Durham. (Plus, I want Durham to be better than Raleigh and Chapel Hill.)
What is your favorite part about living in Durham?
My favorite part about living in Durham is how diverse the city truly is. I love walking through the various neighborhoods and parks and seeing how the city has grown over the years. This city has a strong sense of place and identity, a vibrant arts culture, and an innovative food culture. It draws people who truly care about Durham and other people. I’ve lived here for over 22 years, and I love that I can still find a new surprise, a new nook, and a new business to support.
