The City Clerk’s Office Presents the Monthly Board Member Spotlight:
Carl newman, citizens advisory committee
Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?
Government is simply the name we give to the things we choose to do together. There's so many opportunities to both learn more about Durham and to get involved in the business of each other. In Durham, there are a lot of people with talent, community knowledge, and passion - one of the ways to use it is through public work through the City.
What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?
The Citizens Advisory Committee primarily works with City staff to oversee and administer several million dollars’ worth of federal grants that support local programs to prevent homelessness and provide stable housing for low income renters in Durham. I love being part of a group of Durham residents who are obsessed with providing affordable housing.
What is your favorite part about living in Durham?
Durham is in a transformational moment which is why lifelong residents and new transplants all feel like it's worth imagining and organizing to build a better future. There's a lot to love about Durham's outsized culture-per-acre, but what I love most about Durham is the living, breathing hope that I feel in this community at this moment.
