The City Clerk’s Office Presents the Monthly Board Member Spotlight:
jenise washington, citizens advisory committee
Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?
Being able to exert influence on a variety of local issues closely related to your daily life is important; serving on a local board, committee, or commission affords you that opportunity. Serving also develops a stronger sense of ownership and partnership in the community when you find yourself paying attention to many local issues beyond the scope of your board.
What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?
I enjoy learning about the various organizations, and citizens partnering on the good work to provide services to some of our most vulnerable in the community. The Citizen Advisory Committee has broadened my knowledge in that regard. I was one that could easily see a problem, and questioned if enough people cared to find a solution. I have come to learn through the CAC that many do care, and many are committed to doing the work.
What is your favorite part about living in Durham?
The culture and diversity. My daughter recently moved to a well-known city in central Virginia - each visit with her makes me long for Durham.
