A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Triangle starting 4 p.m. Thursday through 4 a.m. Saturday, with the possibility of snow and ice.

The City encourages residents to prepare, stay informed, and stay home during hazardous weather:

  1. Visit the National Weather Service website for the latest forecast
  2. Prepare a Winter Weather Safety Kit
  3. Sign up for local emergency notifications from Alert Durham
  4. Residents are encouraged to follow the City on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to get up-to-date information about City operations, facilities, and services.

CITY SERVICE & FACILITY UPDATES

Due to weather conditions, all non-emergency City facilities, including Durham City Hall, are closed to the public Friday, January 21, 2022. Services not listed below may still be available as employees who can work remotely will be doing so.

Garbage, Recycling, Yard Waste Collection

  • Curbside garbage, recycling, and yard waste collections are on a one-day delay this week due to the MLK Day holiday.
  • Yard waste and exempt service are suspended on Friday in order to focus on garbage and recycling collections. Collections will instead take place on the next regularly-scheduled yard waste days (January 27 for Thursday customers or January 28 for Friday customers).
  • The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center will delay opening on Friday until 9 a.m. and will close at noon. The center will reopen Monday at 7 a.m.
  • Check the Solid Waste Collections webpage for service updates. To receive curbside collections alerts, download the free Durham Rollout app for iPhone and Android.

Holiday Tree Tree Drop-Off Canceled for Saturday, January 22

Due to the expected poor weather conditions, our Solid Waste crews will not be collecting trees at our six drop-off locations on Saturday, January 22. There are still two Saturdays left on the calendar before the free drop-off locations close on February 5. View tree drop-off details.

REPORT POWER OUTAGES

Power outages and downed power lines should be reported directly to:

Duke Energy

Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation

REPORT DOWNED TREES

Residents are urged to not touch downed trees or branches that are tangled up with power lines.

  • If the downed tree presents an immediate, life-threatening hazard call 911.
  • To report downed trees on City-maintained streets, residents should contact the Durham Emergency Communications Center non-emergency line at 919-560-4600.
  • Residents and property owners are responsible for downed tree removal on private property, driveways, apartment access roads, parking lots, and sidewalks.

SNOW REMOVAL

The Public Works Department will work to clear streets as needed based on the impact of the winter storm. Learn more about the snow removal process and what order streets are cleared.

  • During major snowstorms, the City encourages residents to stay home if at all possible. If residents must travel, they should make every effort to use major thoroughfares that have been plowed and/or treated with sand and salt.
  • Residents should also make every effort to move or park their vehicles on side streets, leaving the primary and secondary streets open and accessible for plowing operations and for use by police, fire, and other public safety vehicles
  • Residents and property owners are also responsible for snow and ice removal in their driveways, apartment access roads, parking lots, and sidewalks. The clearing of private streets is the responsibility of the homeowners within that subdivision.
