Forever Home, Durham Partners Celebrate Groundbreaking at JJ Henderson

group of community leaders holds shovels at groundbreaking

In August 2021, Durham community partners Durham Housing Authority and Laurel Street residential development came together to mark the official groundbreaking of JJ Henderson Senior Campus new construction.

Located in the parking lot of the existing JJ Henderson Tower, the new construction four-story building will consist of 80 dwelling units designated for seniors 62 years or older at a mix of incomes, including 30 percent, 60 percent, 70 percent, and 80 percent AMI. The new community will include a computer lounge and multi-purpose room and raised garden beds for residents. In addition to the new construction, the existing 177 units of JJ Henderson Senior Apartments are currently being renovated.

“Milestones such as this one are critically important for our long-term goals of improving affordable housing in Durham. The developments, renovations and construction progress at the JJ Henderson site are a direct result of the commitment our great citizens made when they voted in support of the $95 million affordable housing bond.”

Former Durham Mayor, Steve Schewel said, “‘Forever Home, Durham’ is a catalyst for change, offering potential renters and homeowners with low-to-moderate income the opportunity to live in the city they love despite substantial price increases in Triangle housing. It’s exciting to celebrate this step in the process.”
