News Release For Immediate Release: April 8, 2022 Durham Police Investigate Fatal Shooting Durham police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened late Thursday afternoon at an apartment complex on Avon Lake Drive. Officers responded to a shooting call in the 300 block of Avon Lake Drive shortly after 4:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found two people who had been shot. One person, 22-year-old Emily Montes de Oca of Durham, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second person, a 27-year-old man, was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The suspect in the shooting barricaded himself inside an apartment and refused to come out for several hours. Members of the DPD’s Selective Enforcement Team (SET) entered the apartment around 10:30 p.m. and took the man into custody. The man, identified as 26-year-old Erick Ray Hudson of Durham, was arrested and charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He has been placed in Durham County Jail without bond. The incident does not appear to have been random, investigators said, and the suspect and victims knew each other. It does not appear to be related to any prior shootings in the area. Several apartments were evacuated during the incident Thursday night.
