Board Member Spotlight
Posted on: May 1, 2022[ARCHIVED] May 2022 Spotlight: Mikel Barton

The City Clerk’s Office Presents the Monthly Board Member Spotlight:
Commissioner Mikel Barton, human relations commission
- Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission? In the face of seemingly overwhelming challenges on a national and global level, it is heartening to be able to have a positive impact on a local and tangible level. Serving in this quasi-governmental role also provides a considerable learning opportunity to better understand how a municipality functions, as well as how a small group of dedicated individuals can affect the leadership priorities of their community.
- What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board? I enjoy the challenges and rewards of throwing down hard with a group of compassionate, capable community members, who represent a variety of perspectives and interests, and who are all striving to improve the community we love.
- What is your favorite part about living in Durham? For me, home is always about people. I feel fortunate to have been born and raised in this special place on earth in which many of the humans, who I most love, respect and find humor with, choose to call home.
