For Immediate Release: June 10, 2022 Durham Police Charge Man with March 2022 Homicide Durham Police investigators have obtained an indictment charging Willie James Smith Jr., 53, with First Degree Murder in a case from March 2022. On March 31, 2022, officers responded to a shooting in the 2800 block of Crest St. Upon arrival, they located Hironori James, 64, of Durham who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Willie Smith Jr. was taken into custody by the Florence County (SC) Sheriff’s Office on June 9, and is being held in South Carolina on an unrelated murder charge.
