Durham to Replace North Roxboro Street Water Main
 Six-Week Project Begins September 26; North Duke Street Vehicle Detour Encouraged

On Monday, September 26, the City of Durham Water Management Department will begin replacing a section of water main in the 2600 block of North Roxboro Street between Hammond Street and Lavender Avenue. 

The work is expected to last approximately six weeks and is necessary after a series of water main breaks in this location over the last several months. The project will remove an aging 8-inch water main and install a new 12-inch pipe in this one-block section. 

During this six-week project, North Roxboro Street will be reduced to two lanes — one northbound, one southbound — in this one-block construction area. North Duke Street is suggested as an alternative vehicle route. Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and as needed on Saturdays, until the project is complete. Limited water service interruptions are planned for property owners in the work zone area. The City’s project managers will work to notify property owners when these limited service interruptions will take place. 

Motorist Detour Route
While through-traffic will be maintained in the work zone area, motorists are encouraged to use North Duke Street as an alternative route via West Murray Avenue and West Club Boulevard. Since North Roxboro Street is a North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) roadway, the City’s project managers are coordinating with the NCDOT and the City’s Transportation Department to adjust traffic signal timing on the NCDOT’s North Duke Street to assist with traffic flow. Commuters are asked to plan accordingly and travel safely along the detour route and in the work zone area. 

Work Zone Motorist Traffic Plan
In the work zone, the southbound lanes of Roxboro Street will be closed and traffic will be shifted into the left northbound lane. Northbound traffic will be funneled into the right northbound lane. Side streets along this block will be barricaded and signed for local traffic only. Sidewalks along the northbound and southbound lanes of North Roxboro Street will remain open to pedestrians through the project timeframe. See Construction Traffic Plan below.

GoDurham Stop Closures
GoDurham Route 4 will maintain its existing schedule on North Roxboro Street with two bus stop closures during this project timeframe. The bus stops on southbound Roxboro Street at Hammond Street (Stop #5032) and northbound Roxboro Street at Lavender Avenue (Stop #5662) will both be temporarily closed until construction is complete. The nearest southbound stop on North Roxboro Street is one block north at North Roxboro Street and Maynard Avenue (Stop #5311).
